Jamaica is an island of the greater antilles situated in the carribean sea. It is 234 kilometers in length and as much as 80 kilometres in width. When christopher comunbus first arrived there were many villages already formed and ruled by chiefs. The taino tribes were largely increasing when the spanish first arrived . The tainos were still living on the island until the beitish finally took control. It has been saif that The taino bloodline has been absorbed into the population. The english generals, william penn ans robert venables, seized the island in 1655. during the next 200 years jamaica became the worlds leadins sugar exporter. It was a slave dependent country

dialalects and accents:
The official language of Jamaica is English. Informally, Jamaican Patois , is more commonly spoken by a majority of the population. Although British English is the most obvious influence on patois, it includes words and syntax from various African languages, other European languages, Pre-Columbian Caribbean languages and Asian languages evidence of historical admixture. In general, patois differs from English in pronunciation, grammar, nominal orthography and syntax. The language's characteristics include pronouncing /θ/ as [t] and /ð/ as [d], and omitting some initial consonant sounds, principally /h/. A number of linguists classify Jamaican Patois as a separate language, while others consider it to be a dialect of English.
Culture:
tha jamaican culture is like a mixture of all the cultures that have inhabited the greater antilles island, jamaica. The largest religion is the christian faith. ements of ancient African religions remain in remote areas, most of which practices are described generally as Obeah, Kumina or Pocomania.
An internationally known aspect of Jamaica's African-Caribbean culture is the Rastafarian movement, that are expressed by reggae music. Rastafari is a local culture, based on some selected teachings of the Old Testament in the bible. Some Rastafari wear their hair in an untended, uncut condition called dreadlocks. However, like most local cultures, there are various strands of thought and practice rather than just one written dogma of the Rastafari movement.
Dance has always been important in Jamaica - from colonial times until the present. Early folk rhythms and movements were associated with Christian holidays. More recently, dances have become associated with the music of Jamaica, particularly dancehall styles. More than 30 distinctive Jamaican dances have been identified. Ska music, with fast beats, also had fast dances. The slow to rocksteady also developed slower dances, allowing dancers to stay on the floor longer. Reggae is associated with many things, including the Rastafarian movement, but influenced the newer styles.
