A thief staged a robbery in paris, getting away with over 8 euros in jewelry from a well known jewler store called chopard. the police have told the press that the robber had costumers at gunpoint before making his escape, they didn't say anything else, other than that he was a man around fifty years old, he was wearing a suit and a hat. He got all the jewls that were on display in the window.

The chopard store now has a sign that says ''closed''because none of the kewls were insured.

It is quite a famous store, it has appeared in many films like ''mesrine-public enemy number one''

informal letter

Hi Leo,

It's been a while since we wrote, so I thought I'd drop you a line to bring you up to date with what's been happening here.

I suppose the most important thing is that marina's job is more secure than we thought. At the beginning of the year, when she got the job, we thought it might only be for one semester, but we just found that she has a permanent contract of sorts. Obviously this is great, as it means we can relax a little. I still don't have what I really want work wise, but it will happen soon. You have to stay positive, don't you?

My parents are both fine, and I think they are really happy that we've moved back. For us, it's great to be so close to family again. We see my sister quite often as she's in London, although we're not that bothered about going into the city. So, what about you these days? Are you still stuck in that old job? Since I've been having so much trouble getting a job I understand your reluctance to change. There is nothing worse than filling in endless application forms, with no idea of what it will lead to.

Anyway, I've got another form to fill in so take it easy man!
Regards

jake

Hello, me and roger have done our oral presenation on the hunger in africa,

mi going to start off with a question,,

does anybody know about the situation at the momen in africa??

More than half of Africa is now in need of urgent food assistance.

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is warning that 27 sub-Saharan countries now need help.

But what appear as isolated disasters brought about by drought or conflict in countries like Somalia, Malawi, Niger, Kenya and Zimbabwe are - in reality - systemic problems.

It is African agriculture itself that is in crisis, and according to the information that we know this has left 200 million people malnourished.

It is particularly striking that the FAO highlights political problems such as civil strife, refugee movements and returnees in 15 of the 27 countries it declares in need of urgent assistance. By comparison drought is only cited in 12 out of 27 countries.

Africa's years of wars, coups and civil strife are responsible for more hunger than the natural problems that befall it.

Critical issues

  • Wars and political conflict, leading to refugees and instability.

In 2004 the continent of Africa had suffered from 26 major wars in the past 50 years. It is estimated that there are more than 16 million refugees and displaced persons in Africa.

Farmers need stability and certainty before they can succeed in producing the food their families and societies need.

  • HIV/Aids depriving families of their most productive labour.

This is particularly a problem in southern Africa, where over 30% of sexually active adults are HIV positive. According to Oxfam, when a family member becomes infected, food production can fall by up to 60%, as women are not only expected to be carers, but also provide much of the agricultural labour.

Consequences

In 1966-1970, net exports averaged 1.3 million tons of food a year, it states.

"By the late 1970s Africa imported 4.4 million tonnes of staple foods a year, a figure that had risen to 10 million tonnes by the mid 1980s."

It said that since independence, agricultural output per capita remained stagnant, and in many places declined.

Some campaigners and academics argue that African farmers will only be able to properly feed their families and societies when Western goods stop flooding their markets.

Jake & Roger

Jake: Where you been Roger - I haven't seen you for weeks.

Roger: I've been in the jail, so I have.

Jake: Jail?

Roger: Yeah - four weeks in the bloody jail.

Jake: Your kidding!

Roger: No - some people got annoyed at the name I gave my baby.

Jake: Away! Did you call him Muhammad and get those Muslims annoyed.

Roger: No - I know better than to call him Muhammad.

Jake: Well did you call him Jesus and get the Pope all upset?

Roger: Don't be stupid!

Jake: Was it Abraham? Did you go and upset all your Jewish friends.

Roger: No! I wouldn't do that.

Jake: Well what did you call him then?

Roger: Inra . . . Inra-Cludgie

Jake: Inra! - Who did that offend - Church of Scotland? Hindus? Buddhists? Chinese?

Roger: No! I didn't offend any religious groups.

Jake: So why did you get bunged up in prison for calling the baby Inra?

Roger: Cos it's such a shite name.

Jake: True . . . good point.
